Planning for Disasters Preparing for emergencies starts long before a disaster occurs. Relationships are established, response plans are tested and refined, and volunteers are trained. This month, we share information on support activities in Japan and our ProMat project, made possible because of relationships made months and years prior. If you're interested in testing your response plans, consider participating in upcoming disaster exercises and learn more about National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster, which represents the volunteer groups that support disaster relief. We hope that you'll join ALAN in preparing now to mitigate the effects of future catastrophic events. ALAN Supports Japan Earthquake Relief We are all deeply saddened by the devastation brought on by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami in Japan. ALAN is working with non-profit organizations active in Japan to secure resources for relief. With the support of the ALAN network, we've located warehouse space and transportation and connected volunteers with groups needing logistics skills and expertise. Visitors to last month's ProMat Expo in Chicago experienced ALAN in action – by packing a box of food to feed a family. With the help of sponsors and volunteers, almost 10,000 pounds of food were donated to the Greater Chicago Food Depository, a member of the Feeding America food bank network. The activity showcased the ability of every member of the community to participate in disaster relief. Thanks to all the individuals and organizations that made this project possible! Testing Disaster Preparedness Plans Much of the news coming from Japan has been about supply chain disruption due to incapacitation of critical component production. Reducing disruption from disasters requires developing and testing response plans. One way you can exercise disaster plans for your business and community is by participating in drills sponsored by government and response-oriented organizations. Consider participating in one of the upcoming events below and share your experiences with us.
One of the Many Faces of ALAN 
"You need everyone at the table – a 'whole community' response," says Bob Leipold, executive director of National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (National VOAD). Leipold recognizes a real need for "holistic relationships with volunteerism at their core." When companies go beyond ad-hoc financial or in-kind donations and work to establish long-term relationships, he explains, they can contribute to relief efforts in a more meaningful way. Supply chain industry professionals possess information that can be extremely valuable to non-profit organizations. Leipold's hope is that the private sector will share its knowledge, resources, and capabilities to foster increased logistics expertise in non-profit disaster relief organizations. |
